An account of my exploits at Lancs & NW Honey Show. A massive thank you to Chris Humphreys, Tom Cross, and Emma Wright Crooks – I could (literally) not have managed to pull together our entry without their ideas,
One moment, I’m listening to tales of past victories (and ignominious failures and disqualifications), the next and I’ve somehow found myself coordinating and setting up the Branch Cooperation class display at The Honey Show.
Construction of the apiary began in January 2010 with the construction of a 200 metre long road and the creation of a badger proof compound to contain the bee hives.
Swarming is the natural means of reproduction of honey bee colonies. A new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees, a process called swarming.
The Asian hornet is smaller than our native hornet and poses no greater risk to human health than a bee. However, they do pose a huge risk to honey bees. Members of the public can also report sightings.
