at Forrest Hills, Hazelrigg Lane, Ellel.

Brief Description of the Course

This 6 week practical course and workshops will enable you to gain the practical skills and background knowledge required to establish and maintain a colony of honey bees.. The course will cover the natural history of the honeybee and the organisation and social structure of life within the hive, examination and description of hives & bee-keeping equipment, honey & beeswax production, honey bee pests and disease control, swarm control and increasing your stock.
During the course the students will all have many opportunities to observe and examine working colonies of honey bees in the beginners apiary, for which some protective beekeepers equipment is available for the students to wear.

Caution; Whilst every effort will be made to protect students from bee stings, if you have ever suffered an adverse reaction to insect stings please seek medical advice before considering enrolling on this course.

The course is for members of the Lancaster branch only, and is free, so you will be required to join before starting the course. Any person who is not a member of the BBKA who enters the beginners apiary does so entirely at their own risk. Any non member of the BBKA will be required to sign a disclaimer prior to entering the beginners apiary. Any person under the age of 16 years who is not a member of the BBKA and who is not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian will be required to produce a disclaimer signed by their parent or legal guardian. before entering the beginners apiary
